Pazhayannur

Pazhayannur is located in Thrissur District of Kerala and is 20 km south of Ottapalam. The place is famous for the Bhagavati Temple, also known as Bhagavati Kavu. It is believed that this goddess was the Kula Daivam of Kochi Kings. Another attraction is the Perumal Koil. The Ram Navami and Gokulashtami of this temple are celebrated in a grand manner. The Gayatri River flows through the village. Alattur (15 km south-east) and Chelakara are nearby towns. Nearest airport is Cochin International Airport and railhead is Ottapalam Railway Station.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, Pazhayannur had a population of 15979 with 7680 males and 8299 females. the history says that, major part of Pazhayannur was under pattar , an upper class people , those who came here from Thanjavoor in Tamil Nadu before hundreds of years. Now itself the new generation of this people are living here. Pazhayannur is a place of religious harmony. Pazhayannur actually forms a junction town in which the road splits into 4 ways. Alathur, Ottapalam, Thrissur and Elanad are those four splits diverted to. Two major educational facilitations are a Higher Secondary School and a college run by Institute of Human Resource Development.


Histor

The main deity of Pazhayannur Bhagavathy is attributed to have come over centuries ago having been escorted by the then Maharajah of Cochin Pazhayannoor Bhagavathy is the paradevatha (Family Goddess) Cochin Royal Family and there had been the source of daily "oottu" or feast for everyone living in and around the village.
The adjoining Siva temple also celebrates Thiruvathira and Mahasivarathri. Pazhayannur is one of the places of historical importance, seen in the map of "Nannangadis" of Kerala. Nannangadis are the tombs of people who lived in the medieval people, usually are in the shape of large pot.


Festivals

Hundreds of devotees visit the Mahakshethram every year, and partake and participate both in person and contributions to carry out the various poojas and offerings to Her. Traditionally the temple celebrates Aarattu, Niramaala, 9 days of Navarathri vilakku which is sponsored in a large way by the local institutions including the Dept. of Police,Revenue etc. The nightly events include Classical music by famous musicians,Ottanthullal, Kathakali and Harikathakaalakshepam etc. Niramaala is one of the major celebrations that goes on every year in Pazhayannur.
The main sloka for Goddess Annapoorneshwari goes as below : " Annapoorne sadapoorne sanakra pranavallabhe Gnanavairagya siddhyaratham bikshamdeheecha paravathy Matha cha Parvathee devyo pitha devo maheswaraha Bandahvaschiva bakthyartham svadesobhuvanthrayam"
